Dental Emergencies
Have a dental emergency?
What Is
EMERGENCY DENTISTRY?
Emergency dentistry focuses on addressing urgent dental issues that require immediate attention. These can include:
- Severe or persistent tooth pain
- Knocked-out or loose teeth
- Cracked, broken, or chipped teeth
- Swelling or bleeding that won’t stop
- Lost fillings, crowns, or dentures
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, contact our emergency dentist in Werribee right away for assistance.
1.
TOOTHACHES
Did you know there are different types of toothaches?
Common Signs of an Infected or Abscessed Tooth
While it can be pain that presents itself only when you bite and chew, it can also be a throbbing, dull ache or a sudden, sharp pain that could be triggered by certain things you consume, temperature-wise (for example, iced drinks or hot food). These are all common signs and symptoms of an infected or abscessed tooth.
Signs of a Severe Tooth Infection
If you are experiencing swelling in the face, this is a sign of an immune response to a severe infection, so we recommend contacting us straight away for immediate medical attention.
Our dentist will be able to take a look and give you a diagnosis to help you manage the pain. Until you manage to get to our clinic, we recommend that you try gently rinsing out your mouth with warm water and placing a cold compress against the affected area to reduce any inflammation.
2.
DENTAL TRAUMA /
SPORTS-RELATED INJURIES
Dental trauma or injuries can be quite distressing, especially when it is your permanent tooth that has been knocked out of its socket. A highly emotional response to such injury is completely normal, but it’s advised to try and stay as calm as possible until you can get help. This is a time-critical operation, and acting fast is a must so that we can try and save your tooth.
If you’re physically active, the chances of dental trauma are quite high.
Consider wearing a protective mouthguard so you can keep your teeth safe and sound while engaging in physical activity. Ultimately, the cost of fixing your broken tooth may be greater than the cost of a fitted mouthguard!

Here are a few tips that you can follow:
- Handle the tooth by its crown and not by the root. This will prevent bacteria from latching onto it.
- Clean the tooth using saline or running water.
- Do not store the tooth in water rather, keep it pressed inside the socket where it came out of or place it in milk to make sure it doesn’t dry up.
- We recommend applying a cold compress against your face until you can reach our clinic to help ease the pain and swelling.
3.
SOFT TISSUE INJURY
Soft tissue injuries in the mouth, such as cuts, tears or punctures to the lips, cheeks, tongue or gums, are quite common. These injuries can result from various incidents like accidental bites, falls, or sports-related impacts. Although they often look alarming due to the mouth’s rich blood supply, most soft tissue injuries are minor and can be managed at home. Emergency dental services should be sought if bleeding doesn’t stop after 10-15 minutes of pressure and if the cut is large or deep and requires stitches.
4.
WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL
If your wisdom teeth have recently emerged and you’re suffering from jaw tenderness/pain, bad breath and bleeding gums, this could mean that your wisdom teeth have only partially emerged or don’t have enough space to properly erupt. You’ll have to get wisdom teeth removed as it could have terrible consequences. Visit our page on wisdom teeth to find out more about how we can help you!

5.
BROKEN / LOST DENTAL WORK
Dental crowns and veneers in particular, are used as protective covers for the teeth that they are placed on. If you have a dislodged crown or filling, these teeth are no longer protected and could easily be damaged. Your tooth may chip, and pieces could break off unless you call us as soon as possible to repair it.
- If this happens to you, store your dislodged crown or veneer in a safe place. In the chance that can reattach it, make sure to avoid hard food that might hurt your teeth or gums when biting.
- If you wear dentures and you find them breaking apart, store them together in a bag and visit our practice. We will try to put it together if possible.
