How do braces work?

Dental braces and other orthodontic appliances are great long-term prospects to help patients straighten crooked or misaligned teeth. Braces work by placing a consistent amount of pressure on each tooth to push them into an ideal position. Frequent visits to our dentist are needed in order to tighten the braces as your smile changes.

What are the benefits of braces?

The advantages of getting braces go far beyond having an aesthetically pleasing smile! Here are some of other benefits you can expect:

  • Teeth will be far easier to clean, drastically reducing your risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Chances of bad breath will be reduced.
  • Less stress placed on your jaw.
  • Improved ability to chew food.
  • Less risk of wear and tear on teeth.

Who are the ideal candidates for braces?

The biggest misconception regarding braces is that it only applies to younger candidates. In fact, patients of all ages may get braces for different reasons. Here are some signs that you might need braces:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Overbite/Underbite/Crossbite
  • Crooked teeth
  • Poor positioning of jaws

Types of braces available

We have four main types of braces you can get at Wyndham Dental depending on your needs. They are:

  • Metal Braces- These are made out of metal brackets and wires. Over the years these braces have gotten noticeably smaller. This type of brace is the most affordable.
  • Clear Braces- Clear braces are designed with the same size and shape as metal braces, but with tooth-colored brackets. Some even have the option of clear wires.
  • Lingual Braces- These are similar to metal braces but placed on the inside of the teeth to be unnoticeable from the outside.
  • Invisalign- Unlike the others, Invisalign are clear plastic removable aligners that are replaced every few weeks. These are only applicable to teenagers and adults for mild orthodontic conditions.

The Process

  1. On your first visit, x-rays and impressions will be taken of your mouth to create custom-fitted braces.
  2. Your bonding appointment may last about 2 hours. Our dentist will insert a device into your mouth to keep it dry.
  3. Your braces will be placed using an adhesive and hardened using a curing light to set the bond.
  4. Our orthodontist will then run the archwire through the braces and hold it together using ligature bands.
  5. You will have follow-up appointments every 4 to 8 weeks to adjust your braces as your teeth move into place.

On average, our patients need to wear their braces for a period of 1 to 2 years. For more complex cases, this can extend to 3 years.

How to maintain oral hygiene with your braces

You will need to floss daily and brush after each meal using fluoride toothpaste. Our dentist will give you a step-by-step guide on how to do this with braces. We also advise avoiding sugary, hard and sticky foods that will stick stubbornly to your braces.

Does wearing braces affect your ability to partake in sports?

While wearing your braces does not affect your ability to take part in sports, we do recommend investing in a mouthguard to wear when playing contact sports to prevent abrasions. You can easily get your custom-fitted mouthguard from Wyndham Dental!

Do you have to wear a retainer?

Once your treatment period is over, you will have to wear a retainer for a period of at least 6 months to ensure your teeth don’t move back to their original positions.
