3 Options for Replacing Missing Teeth
Are you struggling to smile because of a missing or recently extracted tooth? Fortunately, you don’t have to keep on living that way. When it comes to tooth replacement, you have more options than ever.
Often referred to as the gold standard in tooth replacement, dental implants have an extremely high success rate and tend to last for decades. When well cared for, most implants can last for life. Plus, they’re stable enough to support any variety of restorations, including crowns, bridges, and even full dentures. They’re useful no matter how many missing teeth you need to replace.
Traditional dental bridges have been a preferred type of missing tooth treatment for years. A bridge is essentially three or four dental crowns that are bonded together side-by-side, but only the end crowns are functional; the ones between are pontics. That is, the artificial crowns are suspended across the open area, by the functional crowns. The key is that there must be healthy teeth to support the bridge. Implants may also be used.
If a budget friendly option is your top priority, a denture, partial, or “flipper” may be your go-to. These removable prosthetics are held in by clasping around adjacent teeth, or through suction between the “plate” and your gum tissues. Unfortunately, they can sometimes feel bulky or weaken your biting strength, so be sure to discuss the advantages of each option before committing to one over another.
